HMS KENT

By the 1970s the sight of an RN vessel refitting on the Tyne was uncommon, the last two major refits being Euryalus and Fearless at Middle Docks in South Shields. However, in 1978 HMS Kent was docked at Wallsend Slipway for a short refit - seen here alongside on 20 October 1978.

Kent was sent north at this time due to serious union industrial action in Portsmouth dockyard which went on through 1978 and much of 1979, the County class destroyer Kent was based there so nothing much happened during that duration. Work could not be started and if it had she would not have got out. It was that serious and costs were becoming astronomic, the militant unions shut the yard effectively.

I was refitting the sub Otter in Pompey dockyard from march '78, she was still there 2 years later having been due out late '78. Otter was the most affected delay, completely gutted in dry dock, we only had 12 RN refit personnel doing, well, not much. If anything. For me, a fantastic 2 years.
Thats all folks. Sean.
