Dutch-built in 1920, bought in 1922 by Broomhill Colliers, lost by mine 12/1939.
STAGPOOL of 1905 by Ropner and broken up 05/1935.

Excuse my ignorance but where was no 8 pontoon and was it a layby prior to loading coal? What date was Amble the last ship to go alongside and is this a photo of that event.

No 8 Pontoon was at Smith's Dock, North Shields and it was a floating dock with one side. The "high" side of the pontoon was attached to the river bank by a jointed arm that allowed the pontoon to rise and fall but not move in any other direction.

So presumably the AMBLE was about to be docked, but I don't know when.

EDIT: Having now seen the later photos, the AMBLE was docked on the 20/09/1938

Some extra photos of the AMBLE sent to me by Terry. They show AMBLE manoeuvering on to the pontoon and then the pontoon lifting her out of the water. The change in the positions of the "side arms can be seen by comparing photos 1 & 2.
