Neither vessel was part of the TCC Fleet when I was there, glad to see the traditional racing is still going on though I don't think "The Management" would approve. The fastest Hopper was No 3 ( 8 cylinder Crossley 2stroke). I don't suppose they will still be dumping on top of that Ferry that went on fire and sank otherwise it would be a small island by now, seemed a bit of a strange business in regards to exactly what Cargo she was carrying.

STORA-KORSNAS-LINK 1???
Fire off Whitby 5th November 1991.
Abandoned and finally sank on the 10th November 1991 after a series of violent explosions.

Part of cargo was Sodium Chlorate.

Was it that long ago Paul, doesn't time fly when in lockdown  If I remember correctly the problem led to a bit of a stand off by the vessel's which went to fight the fire and if they should put anybody onboard as there was some difficulty getting hold of the cargo manifest, in those days and indeed in today's world what was on the manifest does not always equate to what some of the wagons were actually carrying.
A similiar event took place many years ago when a small commercial aircraft took off from Teesside Airport carrying two passengers and of course the Pilot along with a "Third party" only to belly flop in a field just beyond the Airfield, the Fire Brigade went to assist only to be met with a stand back instruction as the " Third party" was Radioactive material which of course they were not aware of. Can't remember if I.C.I. were fined for non declaration of hazardous cargo or not.

Your good self being a Redcar lad N.E. and thinking about Concrete and burying equipment you will be aware of the Plant on the nearby Wilton Site that was considered so dangerous to use that they quickly shut it down and put it inside a Concrete Sarcophagus ( long before Chernobyl) and there it remains to this day slowly rusting away. :?

Paul if only that was the only 'strange goings in' involving ICI. The Billingham Plant during the War made Perspex for aircraft canopies but was also involved with the 'Tube Alloys' programme which was Britians Atomic Bomb, in 1940 Billingham were producing gaseous uranium hexaflouride for the Atomic Bomb programme, there used to be some strange smells emitting from both ICI plants which although the money was good and the Pension Scheme had to be one of the best on Teesside they did not attract me at all. We already have Radioactive material dumped at Port Clarence being shipped from Christmas Island at a cost of millions of pounds with the residents of Port Clarence being told that it is low level and harmless, if it is harmless why did they not leave it where it was. Just up the road are the massive ICI dumps God knows what has been put in there over the years and then people complain about the scrapping of some Ships by Able which are according to Able are 95% recycled. Now that the Steelworks has shutdown calling Teessiders "Smoggies" is a bit out of date, Should now be called " The Radioactives"
I HATE MONDAYS.
