Great photos, but can someone explain why just a part of the deck cargo is covered in tarpaulin?

Not enough tarps, or just couldn't be bothered. It was really in later times that importers became more fussy about getting their timber dry.

Soaked Timber means extra weight which could produce a List on the weather side, it was quite common to see timber laden Vessels with a pronounced list coming into N.E. Ports in the 1950/60's, some didn't even make it or they had jettisoned some of their wood Cargo. Regards.
