Have relayed this on to some ex-Houlder people as she was in their group (the vessel that is) .... but no luck so far!

Possibly Miss World 1964 - Ann Sidney.

If memory serves me correctly she was in Jarrow at at about that time and opened the Club Franchi, above the bowling alley. She made a remark about the Jarrow Marchers which did not go down well with the Mayor.

I remember going into the club in July 1966 with my parents who were friends of the Franchi brothers. I was only 3 or 4 years too young to be going into the club but looked older. Today I look much younger than my advanced years.

Now listen here Florence we're not all as old as you matey, in 1963 i was still learning my ABC's. My first visit to Club Franchi was in the winter of 1966 when Bertie Franchi took me for a guided tour. Bertie and his lovelly wife Rosina had the best fish & chip shop in Hebburn and it was just near where i lived and i often went for sixpenny worth of chips. Their eldest son, Alberto, was just a couple of years younger than me and so we "knocked around together" for a good number of years. The Club Franchi was owned by brothers Micheal and Alberto Franchi and brothers Nat and Marshall Valente. I saw Dusty Springfield and Tom Jones there as well as a lot of well known footballers of the day who were always there.

Six penneth of chips? I can remember when the going rate was 4 pence. They went up to 6 pence during the summer due to the increased cost of the new potatoes, but CAME BACK DOWN in the winter to 4 pence again. Happy days, when a telegraph pole in the back street was the wickets, also in the summer of course.

They wouldn't have dared put a telegraph pole in our back lane, it would have been downed and used for firewood. We always used a dustbin lid for the wickets, six and out if it went over the wall and you had to climb over and get it back which often met with comlaints from some of the residents "ho, little s**t what you doin' here, go away (or words to that effect)"
