In the early hours of 7th September 1941, HMS Nigeria, Capt JGL Dundas, flag of Rear Admiral Vian, with HMS Aurora, Capt W G Agnew encountered a small German 2 ship convoy escorted by the Kriegsmarine ex gunnery training ship Bremse, Capt Brosy-Steinberg, and smaller units between Nordkap ( North Cape ) and Nordkyn further to the East, denoting the entrance to Porshanger Fjord

None of the German ships carried torpedoes. Neither British cruiser used theirs.
There were no minefields in the immediate locality.
Despite the poor weather collisions or ramming did not happen and denied by both sides.
No German or British submarines were operating in the area.

So, what caused the explosion to Bremse on her port quarter with serious damage to her steering but not disabling.
Nigeria lost her bows to frame 11 with further damage and flooding to frame 22.
Bremse was the sole loss with her charges escaping the British duo.
Nigeria made it back to the Tyne for repairs, quite some distance bearing in mind she did much of it unassisted and astern.

Did a Soviet submarine administer the damage to Nigeria and Bremse.

The verdict is out. Still.
Thats all folks. Sean.

This class of cruiser to which Nigeria belongs are referred to as the Fiji class, after lead ship, or the Colony class.
When the names were being chosen the Colonial Office was asked for appropriate Empire names, not Colony names. Virtually all those selected were to be the 1st time in RN use. And the last.

In 1952 the Indian High Commissioner entered into negotiations with Britain for the loan of 2 cruisers, Nigeria & Jamaica. They already had the ex Achilles as their Delhi, transferred 5 July 1948.
In due course Nigeria was sold to India in 1954, becoming their Mysore 29 Aug 1957 after an extensive refit.

Jamaica. She remained in the RN being sold in 1960.
Thats all folks. Sean.
