Almost complete on 28 August 1972. The first fit of the Mk 8 4.5 inch gun - seen at a hgh angle of elevation, the first UK fit of the Ikara Anti-submarine missile - cover visible aft of the 4.5 inch gun, the first fit of the Sea Dart AA missile - launcher visible aft and the first fit of the associated 909 guidance radars - both visible without their radomes yet fitted. And, for good measure, two main propulsion systems - steam turbines and gas turbines. And knowledgeable souls called shipbuilding a low-tech "sunset" industry.

Paid off 14th June 1991 and converted into a Harbour Training Ship 22nd March 1993.

Extant 2005. Which does not mean she has been snuffed out but means 'Still in existence'.

Left Portsmouth on the 20th October 2010 under tow for Hebburn where she arrived on the 3rd November for a refit to extend her life for another 10 years.

Currently back home a Whale Island.

My GP was doctor for Blyth Harbour Commission back then and he got asked to be the doctor for her while she was doing trials so he had a picture of her on his surgery wall until he retired.

Got straight from the doc's mouth Mr. H. I asked him why he had a pic of her in the Tyne on his wall.
He was on HMS LONDON in the Far East about the time of the Yangtze incident involving HMS AMETHYST.
