This Solen is the second tanker to bear the name for Shell.

From the very same yard at Wallsend came ship 1179 on 15 March 1922, 1 of 4 from S H & W R owned by Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co,. Ltd,. a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell. The other trio were Scalaria - 1173, Spirila - 1177 and Saxicava - 1181. This yard used all odd numbers for new builds.

Up to 1920 Shell had all their new tankers built in the UK when with 19 being ordered these went all over the World, UK, USA, Hong Kong and Holland each builder given some latitude to the design.

I had an interview with SHell back in 1978/79 at SHell Centre.
Process lasted two days with an overnight stay for about 20 of us in London
We were told that every ship’s officers mess was a shell after which the ship was named.
For some reason which they did not know the bigger the ship the smaller the shell they were named after

Yep, Neptune Yard used the even numbers and Wallsend used the odd.

I also had an interview on Turnbull Scott's SKELDERSGATE which was in Mercantile Dry Dock at the time, Cunard cancelled my interview in Southampton because they were selling off tonnage.
Stevie Clarke's old offices on Collingwood Street, thats on the way to Blaydon by the way, Common Brothers on Market Street and Everards down in Greenhithe.
So before George blames me for the demise of the Merchant Navy, all the companies bar Shell, have ceased trading, it aint my fault!!!

Graham

Graham, with all your talents they would still have been trading with huge fleets!

And, bar Everards, would have had fantastic company histories in print!
Turnbull Scotts was the last interview I had of that bunch in 1979.
The next one was 2011 for Asda and I got that gig!
