Wilkinsons have been in the Scrap business for many generations although now a shadow of its former self and not as big as those on the Tyne, ripping the new fangled Turbines out along with the the surplus Boilers leaving one Boiler in and sticking an ex Trawler Triple Expansion on the centre Shaft sounds like a Scrappy for Diving Operations bearing in mind at that time there would be plenty of Ship wrecks laid around North East Coast ( U Boat hunting ground) containing Brass (Valves and Condenser Face Plates and Ferrules ) along with Copper (Condenser Tubing) around that time to make the this sort of operation worthwhile.
Pounds Of Portsmouth like many Scrapyards made a fortune out of buying Ex Military vessels for scrap and then selling them on either complete or part complete for further use ( barring of course Submarines) :)
