59 Years ago today! Not a particularly clear photograph (one of my first efforts with a Brownie 127) showing Gorjistan being manoeuvred into Readhead’s Gut after her launch on 1 May 1961, but the old timber jetty to the left is interesting. The 1894 OS map of the area shows, extending from the far end of the jetty, roughly where the stern of the nearest tug is, the “Tyne Dock Landing Stage” – presumably one of the many such landings between South Shields and Newcastle used by the Tyne General Ferry company before it was seen off by growing tram services. Everything in the picture has now, of course, vanished.
Regards, Dennis.
