The 15th of 16 Type 23 General Purpose Frigates, F238 NORTHUMBERLAND was Laid down by Swan Hunter Shipbuilders Ltd, Wallsend on the 4th April 1991.
Launched on the 4th April 1992 she entered Service on the 29th November 1994.
Displacement 3,600 Tons. 4,300 Full Load.
Speed 30 kts, 15 kts on electric drive.
Combined Diesel Electric and Gas Turbine (CODLAG)
Twin Rolls-Royce SMIC Spey Gas Turbines of 26,150 shp.
Four Paxman Valenta 12 RPA 200CZ Diesel Generator Sets.
Twin Props.
17 Officers, 57 Senior Rates and 111 Junior Rates.
The First six Northumberland's were all 3rd Rates being built in 1679, 1705, 1743, 1750, 1794 (Captured from French.) and 1798.
No 7. Iron Armoured Frigate built at Blackwall in 1866.
No 8. Cruiser ordered 15th May 1929 and cancelled 1st January 1930.
No 9. Frigate (RCN) River Class cancelled December 1943.
No 10. Type 23 1992.
