Narwhal was 1 of the 8 Porpoise class diesel boats which preceded the Oberon class.
Look at the photo and 1/4 of way from the sharp end and the blunt end are 2 triangular shaped cut outs in her casing, which is there to walk on and save you tripping over everything underneath above the pressure hull. Makes it look prettier too.
I digress, these 2 features are for the SSE's, or submerged signal ejectors, 1 in the fore ends / fwd torpedo space and the aft 1 in the, aft ends, these boats having 5 compartments.
The SSE is an underwater signal device which ejects a canister with nice pretty flames and lots of smoke which would be used by any survivors should the boat sink and remain intact. Also used in exercises for all manner of messages from i/you have just sunk you/me and so forth. Do not drop, they make a fearful mess.
The 2 SSE's are on this port side only.
Thats all folks. Sean.
