The Dutch frigate TROMP leaves the Tyne.
Quite a large and capable frigate so everyone, other than the Dutch, considered her to be a guided missile destroyer.

Taking up Dave's comment..

The TROMP had a Full Load Displacement of 4,308 tons. (Frigate)

In comparison the UK Type 42 Destroyers like NEWCASTLE and GLASGOW were 4,250 fl after refits.
The Duke class frigates like NORTHUMBERLAND were 4,200 fl and the Type 22 frigates like BROADSWORD were 4,400 Full Load.

So our Type 22's, also classed as frigates had a higher Full Load displacement than TROMP.

The new TROMP, still classed as a Frigate is 6,145 tonnes Full Load Displacement.

And the Type 45 Destroyers like DARING are 7,570 tonnes Full Load Displacement.

Now should they have been classed as Cruisers????

The second photo of Tromp alongside Newcastle Quayside was taken in January 1999 when she was carrying the prototype Thales Smart-L early warning radar - the large black object on the after deckhouse.
