HMS NAIAD alongside Newcastle Quay on two separate occasions.
She was built by Yarrow in 1965 and was converted to carry the Ikara anti-submarine missile.

Naiad, having paid off in May 1987, was promptly selected for further service as a trials ship.

In September she was given a complete survey and prepared for the numerous tasks which would befall her in the ensuing 3 years.
The full title of these trials was Hull Vulnerability Trials Safety or Project HulVul.

It was as HulVul the ex Naiad became until the 28 Sept 1990 when she was finally expended in a Sinkex towed to the location by the 'Explosion Support Tug' Rollicker escorted by the Type 21 Frigate Arrow. Finally subjected to helo attack and limpet mines HulVul vanished beneath the Atlantic waves looking remarkably intact bearing in mind the extensive assaults she endured in those 3 years.
