50 YEARS AGO TODAY!
Monday, 28 August 1972, August Bank Holiday, and time for my then still almost annual Tyne river trip.
The first photo I took that day is recorded merely as "warships". Hwever, as then, and still now, I have no great interest in naval vessels I did not record any names.
So it's good that through NEM Dennis comes to my rescue with his photo above. From it I can identify only D819, the inside vessel on the left, which was the AMSTERDAM, Dutch navy. From Dennis's sightings around that same time the others seem to have been HURON, Canadian navy, SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN, West Germany navy, and BIGELOW, US navy.
So, many thanks, Dennis.

BIGELOW obviously outside AMSTERDAM, then SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN inside HURON?

Back home for the " Huron" it was always sad to see 'War Canoes' with such a glorious career being towed away for Disposal.

Looks like I misdirected myself over the identity of these warships!
The 1972 built HURON did not come to the river until 1974 and it seems it was our own British NORFOLK that was the fourth ship of the squadron. Sorry about that, folks.
