I had to go through to Sunderland yesterday and came back up the coast. Spotted the profile of a warship heading north and towards the Tyne.
She turned out to be HMS SOMERSET.
I guess Dennis was waiting "on the Groyne" along with a very loud party shouting encouragement (to him?) whilst I was on my lonesome further up near the old pilot jetty.

and then from Comical Corner.

The end of the Groyne it was Dave – and pretty chilly. Generally, when people shout at me it’s not encouragement! I suspect there was one very embarrassed matelot on board – unfortunately I could not read the message on their banner.

A pretty old name in the grey/gray navy.
This is the 4th ship to serve with this name, dating back to 1698, although the 1st appears to have been Somersett. Patently over indulged in the local brew.
Name unused since the 3rd was wrecked off Cape Cod in 1778, with those named for the County. This named for the Duke, as are all the Type 23's.
I refer to her as Cidesrset or Scrumpysh1t cos of the County association with that particular alcoholic beverage.
Thats all folks. Sean.

I thought she was looking a bit scruffy for the RN, but then I don't know where she has come in from.
Perhaps the welcoming committee Dennis mentioned means she hasn't just come round from Plymouth.

Classy looking Type 23, now in her 29th year in service but recently fitted with the 2x4 Naval Strike Missiles.
