City centre visitors

Before Newcastle quayside was gentrified it was possible to see naval vessels close to the City centre. The first picture shows the Dutch destroyer Utrecht, just upriver of where the Pitcher & Piano now stands, on 25 September 1971. The second shows the (West) German MCMV Schutze almost under the Tyne Bridge on 3 April 1966. Both pictures were taken from the Tyne Bridge.

thanks Dennis - without the silly bridge the drinkers in th Pitcher could have enjoyed close up views of ships.

Some 35 years earlier 10th Sept 1936, HMS Echo H23 was more or less in the same place. Alongside in Newcastle.
Strange she has her Awnings out, recently came back from the West Indies, may be airing them or more likely keeping the rain off the visitors.
Not seen this on a ship while in UK water.
