National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. San Diego. California.
Commissioned 16th October 1971.

Disp. 8,342 Full Load.
D: 522.3 x 69.5 x 15 Feet.
A: 4 x 3in 50 Cal AA in twin mounts.
E: 6 x Alco Diesels. 2 Shafts. 16,000 hp=20 Knots. Sustained.
Crew 213.
Troops 379.

Unloading is via a 112ft Ramp supported by two derrick arms rather than by Bow Doors, to allow for a hull form that would permit a sustained speed of 20 Knots.

Fairfax County moored off Jarrow slake on 1 October 1972 with the refrigerated pallet carrier Zira, (Ship No. 45) built at Swan Hunter’s South Shields yard (John Readhead & Sons) and delivered the following month, completing in the background. Fairfax County later became the Australian amphibious transport Manoora.
