Which ABARENDA do you mean Marvin??

The US built Tanker ACME (1916) which was named ABARENDA between 1944 and 1946

OR

The 1892 Tyne built Cargo Ship which became ANTONIO in 1926??????

Hi Paul, Marvin is looking for information on the 1892 built ship from Edwards. He has been in touch with me by email. I find the Tyne & Wear Archives search very difficult to use so cannot tell yet whether they hold plans. Any idea on the reason behind the name?

ABARENDA and ABENDANA were both owned by the Graham SS Co Ltd. (J Graham &Co) Cails Buildings, Quayside, Newcastle.

I thought I might have found a clue with ABENDANA. Abendana is a Jewish Surname but I cannot match Abarenda.

Jacob and Isaac Abendana were both Jewish Theologians and 'hakam' of London in the 1600's. A Hakam is one who is learned in Jewish Law OR a title given to a Rabbi by the Sephardic Jews.

Abarenda may possibly be a Jewish Surname but I cannot trace it. The Company appears to have just owned two ships and started with new orders in 1892 but both were sold by 1899.

Ploughing through to page 31 of a Google search .... ABARENDA SOUTH and ABARENDA WEST are villages in Sri Lanka!!

The word may also have Turkish or Urdu roots, but could not get the references I found to open to check this!!

Still interesting to conjecture where else the J. Graham & Co might have got the name?
