Registration (free) required but you then have access to current details of ships listed in the Register excluding, unfortunately, trawlers.
In the absence of available current registers a combination of Equasis and subscription based Miramar (for details of builders and any previous names, etc.) provides all the basic information for my continuing database .... and for keeping it reasonably well up-to-date with changes - renames, scrapping, etc.
