Thinking back to ships that "got away", in other words I didn't get the opportunity to photograph them, I recall the Italian flagged NAPOLI visiting the Tyne in the early sixties. As I remember she had a blue funnel with a (white) star thereon.
I am curious to know if she was the ex ARAYBANK (1940) which was bombed and sunk in 1941, raised in 1947 and sold to Achille Lauro who had her converted to an emigrant carrier.
In 1960 she was converted to a freighter and served as such until broken up in 1971.
Does anyone recall seeing NAPOLI in the river, and better still have a photo?
