ADELFOTIS II, Lebanon, 3668gt, completed Lithgows, Port Glasgow, 10-1929, ex Venus-57, ex Baron Stranraer-50. Wrecked Herd Sands, South Shields 20.1.63 (details from Miramar). One of the most notable local(ish) wrecks but one that I did not see for myself. (Photos: Teesside Branch WSS Albert Weller Negative Collection)

Neither did I get to see her, Ron!
But I see that Kevin left a message on her side :D
Typical Hebburnite.

The wind and tide conditions were such that the water was 2 - 3 inches over the Groyne some time after the grounding. The local Volunteer Life Brigade had great fun rescuing the crew by breeches buoy, having fired rocket lines to the ship - they could, of course, have waited until low tide and walked up the beach. I took the first picture late on the day of grounding, the second during March 1963.

Must admit, I'm with Dennis on this one. They probably put more lives at risk by getting them off in the teeth of the Gale, when they could have walked them up the beach at low tide. There is virtually no damage to the seaward side of the ship and she was aground on Sand. When you look at film of the event they managed to drop them all into the sea at least once before they got them ashore.
OK I admit it would have been uncomfortable, but at least they would have been dry!

Perhaps the 'Freedom from Hunger' went back to her days as a 'Baron' in the fleet known as the Hungry Hogarths.

I can confirm Hogarths well earned title as previously mentioned, did a trip to Australia to pick up Grain on a Baron boat to get the sea time in for my 2nds Ticket, the food seem to just meet B.O.T. requirements and the chef de cuisine aka Ships cook was not very imaginative when cooking it, seemed to think that a bit of Woodbine ash added flavour/body to the meals. Never sailed again with Hogarths.
