George,
Take no notice of old chubby chops. I think the Laughing Cavalier comes to mind, swashbuckling and debonnaire.

Built as the NIEUW AMSTERDAM for Holland America Tours, Curacao together with her sistership, the NOORDAM by Chantiers de l'Atlantique, St Nazaire as Yard Numbers V 27 and X 27.

As Built.

33,930 Gross; 4,217 Dwt; 704 x 89.2 Feet.
Twin Sulzer's. Total Power 29,400 Bhp=21 Knots.

NA=1,374 Passengers and 559 Crew. N=1,210 Passengers and 560 Crew.

Although they both look better than many newer Cruise Ships I have always thought they have a somewhat 'Flat' design not helped by the Stern. They also have a higher Length to Beam Ratio than many other Vessels which possibly makes them better sea-boats, or does it!
Paul Hood. + WSS Tyneside Branch Hon Sec.

As MARELLA SPIRIT (8024014), Malta, 33930gt, completed St Nazaire 5-1983
1983 NIEUW AMSTERDAM - 2000 PATRIOT - 2000 NIEUW AMSTERDAM - 2002 SPIRIT -
2003 THOMSON SPIRIT - 2018 MARELLA SPIRIT

Cadiz - 18 October 2018:

Little realising, until now, that I would also be seeing her sister-ship NOORDAM (now MIRELLA CELEBRATION [q.v.]) while on this same cruise.
