50 YEARS AGO TODAY - River Tyne

Postby teesships » Wed Aug 08, 2012 3:37 pm

8 August 1962 was a day out during which I saw 150 ships in a round tour of Hartlepool (well, ships noted from the train!), Sunderland, Tyne, and ending up back at Middlesbrough Dock. 114 of those 150 sightings were noted on the Tyne itself!
So, of those 150 different ships, how many did I actually photograph? You will not believe me, but I'll tell you! 6 (six)!! -
2 in Sunderland,
BARFORD (see: viewtopic.php?f=176&t=1516)
HOUGHTON (see: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=3212)
3 on the Tyne,
1 in Middlesbrough Dock!!
MARTAND (see: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=4790)
The three on the Tyne:
HUDSON FIRTH (5156426): Hudson S.S. Co. Ltd., London, 3117gt, completed by Aisla S.B. Co. Ltd., Troon, 12-1949.
1967 LUGANO (Panama), BU Dalmuir 11.10.72 [W.H.Arnott Young & Co Ltd].

BRITISH FLAG (5052620): BP Tanker Co. Ltd., London, 11376gt,
completed Hawthorn Leslie, Hebburn, (Newcastle according to LR!) 7-1953.
BU Burriana 19.7.71 [Aguilar y Peris].
1228britishflag.jpg
BLENDA (5046310): DFDS. Denmark, 1481gt, completed Frederickshavn 11-1956.
1972 GENERAL SANTOS CITY (Philippines), 12-1976 sank after fire and explosion.
(Miramar: fire 24.12.76 & sank 7nm NE San Nicolas Shoals 27.12.76 [Manila-Zamboanga, passengers])

I found this elsewhere on the 'net, so I take no credit for it!

NOSTALGITIS! I'm feeling so nostalgic lately. It's a strange, happy-yet-melancholy sort of feeling. Not so much that I want to go back to being a teenager, but that I miss some of the simplicity, some of the possibilities, some of the things you just look forward to. I still have plenty of that now, but for some reason, I hear an eighties song and all of a sudden, I'm 16 again, ready to go to work at the bathing suit store in the mall. I need to appreciate this mood for what it is, thank it, and move on. It's not good to linger. Although I do miss those eighties songs.

Substitute sixties for eighties (and, maybe, ships for songs?) and I think that sums up some of us Forumites?

Ron
PS. On 8 August 1962 I, too, was sweet sixteen!

Auld Gits - 8th August 1962 I was four days short of three months and I bet I had been wheeled down in the pram to the quayside at Blyth a couple of time by then.
