The then Russian Barque Tovarishch under arrest in the Albert Edward Dock in 1995 (I think she was there from 1995 to 1997) when she was finaly sold and went for a long refit by her new owners who renamed her back to almost her original German name of Gorch Fock to Gorch Fock I.

Olso spent quite a bit of time at Newcastle Quayside just by the Law Courts..........

Something is jogging my memory regarding her Crew.

I seem to remember her remaining crew were stranded, but helped out by Local's and The Mission.

Did they drive back home in a couple of Lada's????????????

Tell the truth, you've been at my sherry, thought there were bottles missing but couldn't see my fingers to count them.

Hi Guys

Well you all generally right.

The Tavarishch first came to the Tyne in 1994 and returned the following years in May 1995 for a planned £500.000 refit at the A & P Yard, however once drydocked it quickly became evident that this cost was way out and was re costed at £2m.

The Ukranian goverment could not afford this and she was then put into the Albert Edward dock and placed under arrest as unseaworthy, however the crew were just left stranded and was very much supported by local people and the Mission to seamen.

The Teessisde Develoment Corporation (TDC) got involved and a grand plan was put together for her to be part of a Museum and permission was granted for her to be towed to Middlesborough and she arrived on the 7th May 1997 by the tug Phoenix Cross. with the original crew going home.

However the TDC fell foul of the Millenium Commission when funding was withdrawn and once again the ship was abandoned with another crew and Tovarishch was towed to Wilhelmshaven on 1st September 1999.

Mike,

As a native, I'll have my usual scream at your mis-spelling of MIDDLESBROUGH! But, after that, will concede my memory must be at fault. I have now checked my notebooks and, yes, my first sighting of the TOVARISHCH was, indeed, on the Tyne on 26 October 1995!! And this is relatively "recent" history ..... good job I can remember the 1960s like yesterday (when was that?)
