This one and its mate EASTPORT were regulars at Newcastle in 1962-63 loading sulphates for Londonderry and Belfast. The cargo was loaded via conveyors fed from a steady stram of lorries dumping the cargo into hoppers on the conveyors. As well as small coasters, bigger vessels such as Hudson and Cory colliers loaded here sometimes.

The small building on the extreme right was used by Baxters at this time which I recall was a haulage firm. However, it was a long time ago and the view from the pram was not always good.

I did see the SOUTHPORT myself on the Tyne in 1962, but took no photo. However, I've a note of some negatives in the Weller collection which I will have to dig out and scan. Don't think they will beat your great shot, however!

Oh, go on, you've persuaded me, you've forced my hand! I've now scanned those Albert Weller negs of the SOUTHPORT.
However, the first question I have is as to where Albert was when he took these views? It looks like the Tees but we are talking of the period 1959-64. I suspect that must be early development of the North Tees refineries to the right, so that would place him in the vicinity of Eston Jetty. The other views, however, show extensive wharfage in the background, so I'm not sure. Having said that, I am not familiar with how that stretch of the Tees actually looked back then! (And it does look a bit wider than I would have thought at that point?) The next is the enlargement of the half-frame image above, so lacks some sharpness! The other two views come out a bit better!

Yes the Southport was completed by a company called "Coaster Construction" at Montrose.

I expected them to be owned by a UK Company but Southport was Owned by "Valmar Cia Nav SA", Panama and Eastport by "Takis Cia Nav S.A" also of Panama.
However Miramar has them both owned by "A Moschakis and Co".

Just to add to the history - that building later became known as The Shed and was used on Sundays as an extension to the Quayside Sunday Market with stalls being within the building. It was demolished in roughly 2000 and has remained empty since then, albeit one of Newcastle's growing empty plots which are described as Pocket Parks.
