Not absolutely sure, but I think that it says Baltic Chambers on the building on the left. If so then the new Crown Court would fill most of the space on the right, replacing the low garage type structure. Fine photo. Thanks.

Maybe I am getting old, but was this not the Turmoil in her former days?

OTS seem to have had three tugs of this name in quick succession between 1946 through to the third built new in 1955.
The first two were former EMPIRE tugs.If the photo is indeed late 1950s then the probable subject tug is:
MARINIA (5225215), 392gt, completed Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Beverley, 1-1955
66 SALVANA - 81 MARANAW - BU Manila 28.11.86 [Boy Aquario]
(So, cross reference to shipbuilding at Beverley!)

To clear up any potential confusion:
TURMOIL (6122160), 1120gt, completed Robb, Leith, 8-1945
68 NISOS KERKYRA - 71 MATSAS - Broken up at Perama 1/1986
Apparently The Admiralty chartered her out to Overseas Towage & Salvage from 1948.
Her enduring fame came from close involvement in the FLYING ENTERPRISE saga.

Agree Ron, that's the 1955 Newbuild as you describe.

The other two were Empire Aid (Marinia 1952-1954) and Empire Mary (Marinia 1946-1950). Even allowing for modifications the design was quite different. Incidentally the Aid and Mary were built at Clelands.


Dave, your right, we are looking up Broad Chare and everything to the Right is now the Law Courts. Behind the little building was a Cafe where I used to go for a Big Mug of Tea and a Span Sandwich. (1960-1966)
Ron H might remember but in my day the low building was an Oil Depot.....Arnotts, I think???

The mention of the famous 1945-built TURMOIL in a previous message allows me to take the liberty of drawing the attention of Forumites to the sad news of the passing of Kenneth Dancy, mate of the TURMOIL during the FLYING ENTERPRISE saga which made a big impression on me as a 6-year old boy as 1951 turned into 1952!
