Yet another example of the war-built 'Scandinavian Type" standard freighter which could be seen visiting Dunston staithes in the 1960's
EMPIRE BARD was completed in 1942 by the Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd., Dundee., her triple expansion engine supplied by the North East Marine Engineering Co. (1938) Ltd.
Like many of her type she played her part in WWII convoys heading for Russia. On what I guess may have been her maiden voyage in 1942 she sailed from Oban to Loch Ewe then headed eastwards on April 8th as part of convoy PQ14. Heavy pack ice and dense fog forced the ship to put into Akureyri, Iceland, from here she eventually continued her interrupted journey to Murmansk after joining convoy PQ15
On another of her voyages, this time in March 1944, problems with her steering gear forced her to put into Lokanka, on the north Kola Peninsular. She later reached the Kola Inlet sailing at about 6 knots, accompanied by two escorts

In 1946 the ship was bought by the Dundee, Perth & London Shipping Co. Ltd., under their ownership, and renamed ANGUSBURN she was to visit Archangel on several more occasions, loading timber for the UK
1955 saw the ship sold to Rederei A/B Hildegaard of Mariehamn, and renamed BRETTENHAM. She met her fate in 1971 at Cartagena in the hands of Spanish ship breakers
