Sister to MELIKA from the Furness yard in the same year, also for Afran.

Remember the Melika, always had that American look about her with the Visor above the Bridge windows, if the Bridge windows had been round she would have completed the American look. :D

The small 'visor' shows up better on AHMADI than the photos we have here:

I don't remember another vessel built at the Furness Yard fitted with a visor around that time although it was a long time ago the Liquid Sulpher Carriers may have had them  Tankers were really the Furness Yards forte but a massive overspend on the Liquid Sulpher Carriers which were a totally different proposition the stainless steel tanks being on sliding shoes ( no wonder other Yards would not take them on ) left huge debts which the Yard never really recovered from.

Safety costs money which was certainly the case with these two vessels as they were built under the dark cloud of a previous Sulpher Carrier a converted T2? blowing up whilst alongside, rumour had it that the Master went ashore when he got back his ship was on the bottom :o
I am surprised the Louisiana and Texas lasted so long and I would put that down to the Furness build quality on what were technically difficult builds which cost a Lorra Lorra money, somebody was way waaaaaaaaaaaay out with their costings.
Charlie Clore (Sears Holdings) was a generous employer I was reliably told that when a previous job wanted to be finished A.S.A.P. (Drydock?) which meant working over Christmas, as a thank you for those Fitters who gave up their Christmas they were not only rewarded with a generous bonus they also found Charlie Clore had turned up in his Bentley one morning with a Boot full of Whiskey and Chocolates for those that had worked and their Wives as a Thank You.
