This is a tale of two Trawlers.... The WILLIAM BARLOW and the JOHN BRADFORD, both built by Hall Russell at Aberdeen in 1917 for the Royal Navy. Both were classed as non-standard "Strath" types of 226 Gross Tons. Both were sold in 1920 with the BRADFORD renamed DORILEEN and the BARLOW renamed BEN ARDNA.
By 1924 they had swapped names with the BEN ARDNA ON 144415 (Ex DORILEEN, ex JOHN BRADFORD) owned by Richard Irvin and Sons Ltd. and the DORILEEN ON 144416 (Ex BEN ARDNA, ex WILLIAM BARLOW) owned by Richard Irvin Jnr.

The BEN ARDNA (144415) was requisitioned in August 1939 and converted for the Examination Service. She was then lost as the result of a collision in the Tyne on the 12th May 1942.

The DORILEEN was purchased by the Royal Navy in January 1940 and converted into a Boom Defence Vessel. She was then sold back for commercial service in May 1946, again under the ownership of Richard Irvin & Sons Limited. She was scrapped in 1957.
