And eventually they did move, on 16/02/2018
Tyne tugs move barge LOUIS off the Smulders Quay and take it down to Tyne Dock area where it was to be connected to UNION LYNX for the tow to Dundee.

The Smulders yard after LOUIS had sailed. Barge JAN can be seen at the far left at Smulders 2 with DIAN KINGDOM still alongside.
JAN was moved up to replace LOUIS (at Smulders 1) on the 17th with another barge OSPREY CARRIER II due into Smulders 2 on the 18th.

I didn’t appreciate quite how imposing these structures are until I took a closer look this morning.

SEA ALFA has been sitting alongside the loaded barge JAN at Smulders for quite some time, acting as a safety vessel. The barge was due to sail yesterday 23/03/2018 but was delayed by high winds. SEA ALFA can be seen in this photo holding the barge up against the quay at Smulders, just in case she went down the river on her own.
The barge JAN plus two wind turbine bases left for Dundee this morning 24/03/2018 towed by UNION LYNX. SEA ALFA left at the same time.
