Didn't see any locals either - except one chap from somewhere near Sunderland. My view taken from near the Customs house, couldn't see any other point closer.

You are right about the Custom's House view point except that you can hoist yourself up and look over the wall at what was Readhead's larger drydock.
Does mean holding the top of the wall with one hand and taking the photo with the other hand. And looking a bit of a pr@t at the same time.

I usually take a set of step ladders, used to park the van up against the wall and sit on the roof or wind the window down and stand on the sill.
