Berengaria & White Patent Oil Burning Co Ltd

Postby Whickham » Tue Nov 04, 2014 8:11 am

Nice little article in yesterday's Journal about the BERENGARIA which was converted to oil fuel burning on the Tyne. Of special interest to me was the emphasis on the White Patent Oil Burning Co Ltd of Hebburn, which Kevin & I had discussed a few years back, but not really got very far.

So White was CE of the TURBINIA aged 7!!
Presumably a typo over his date of birth?

TURBINIA.

The TURBINIA was built by Hawthorn Leslie at Hebburn as Yard Number 393 in 1904 for the Turbine SS Co Ltd of Hamilton.

She was a Passenger Vessel of 1,064 Gross, driven by Three Steam Turbines giving a speed of 16 knots.
After two changes of Ownership she was broken up at Sorel in late 1937.

Advert sent to me by Kevin, which had triggered the original interest. I had never heard of White prior to this.

That must be at the end of her life, Kevin taken at Sorel.

Looks like she has a very long name as well...... "Canada Steamship Lines Turbinia".

This is her returning from sea trials in may 1904. Think the tug is titan.
