Postby Dennis Maccoy » Mon Mar 27, 2023 5:48 pm

The imaginatively named Containerships VIII, completed in Germany in 2006, arriving from the Tees for the container berth this afternoon.

"Come in, Number 8" as in our local boating lake.

Not at Redcar NE the lake is presently dry much to the annoyance of the chugging Two seater Motorboat Coxswain's and the Model Boat Coxswain's, Rowing Boats are available upon request, apparently they are waiting for the next highest Tide to fill it up. Bearing in mind the amount of water we have in Keilder now the Steelworks are no more I would have thought they would have used freshwater due to concerns in regards to a chemical? killing the Crustaceans which may also strip the paint off the Boats. :(
The message is "Keep your mouth shut if you fall in" as local Fire Persons ;) have been taken ill after doing waterborne exercises on the River Tees.

I didn't know either NE, how it is done I have no idea, all that was mentioned was that they had to wait for the next highest Tide to fill the Pool, possibly there is a non return valve somewhere in the filling system, Pumps?
You would have thought it would have been filled with Fresh Water as a Reserve Bund in case of Fire in the surrounding property and especially now with suspected chemicals in the Seawater just off Redcar.

Just like yourself NE I am now curious how it is done, as you were a Redcar Lad I assumed/presumed that it was common knowledge amongst Redcar folk :D
Further investigation is now in (wave?) motion by the miracle of t'internet and an answer from Redcar & Cleveland Council so it could take some time unless member/ members of this Site from Redcar have a more direct routing to an answer.

Tidal flow it is, although it takes more than one high tide to fill it up, these are expected by the end of the Month apparently?
The Mechanics of the operation are unknown to me at the moment but I suspect by remote Diesel engined pumps with the suction end in the sea and the outlet in the lake which is just behind the Sea Wall.
Looks like it could be an allnighter for the standby team and then straight into the Clarendon for a Pint and Luncheon to spend their Overtime Pay :D
