A wide-angle view from Whitehill Point on the River Tyne
Alan's caption read .... "The photo was taken in the 1880's from Whitehill Point looking to the east. In the foreground is the walkway to the steam ferry. Subsequently the Point was removed about 1892 as part of the extensive dredging works of the river. The present day International Ferry Terminal is situated on the site. On the left is the Ballast Hill with the 'unreliable' time gun and also on the left the construction works of what is now known as Tyne Commission Quay."
There is certainly a broad array of ships of the period in this view, from the tiny steam ferries which crossed the river to the sailing vessels on the buoys and of course a number of the early steam colliers waiting their turns on the coal staithes.
