I remember the gear worn on the old CITY OF LEEDS at Redcar in mid-1950's (I was chief assistant brass polisher, a job demanding great bravery). There were overhead racks with yellow waterproof jackets and trousers, sou'wester hats and cork lifebelts. I once made the mistake as a small youngster of trying to help by releasing the rope that held up one of the racks, it's a wonder it didn't take me up to the ceiling!
